New Day Academy, one of several hundred new small schools created during the administration of Mayor Mike Bloomberg, never achieved its promise. Opened in 2005 in a building shared with several other schools, it was declared a failure in 2011. No new students were admitted but those who were enrolled were allowed to stay until the school closed at the end of the 2012-2013 school year. Graduates seeking school records should contact Bronx Latin for their transcripts, 718-991-6349.

New Day shared the former IS 158 building with the Dr. Izquierdo Health and Sciences Charter School,Bronx Latin, and Bronx Career and College Prep High School.

New Day's founding principal, Paul Schwarz, was a nationally recognized educator and a veteran teacher and principal of the New York City public school system. He was an advisor to the U.S. Department of Education during the Clinton Administration and was co-director of Central Park East Secondary School during its early, celebrated years. Schwarz recruited New Days founding faculty, which included young teachers from prestigious universities such as Harvard. Schwarz only stayed a year before retiring. He was replaced in Sepetember 2006 by Daisy Fontanez, formerly theassistant principal.

The project-based, hands-on curriculum for which New Day was known was hard to reconcile with the Bloomberg administrations demand for performance as measured by standardized tests. In 2010, only 13 percent of students were on grade level in English language arts (ELA), and only 8 percent were on grade level in math. Attendance and graduation rates were poor as well.
