District 29 CEC meeting

 In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King’s Birthday, and the upcoming Black History Month, the students from the ore-k center will perform a poem and songs for attendees as a tribute in addition to a short slide-show highlighting student centered activities from both D29Q Pre-K Centers  Superintendent Murray will acknowledge the students that participated in the “Respect for All Essay and Poster Contest”.  Presentation from WE Schools, a program that partners with the NYC DOE through Service in Schools to promote youth empowerment and volunteerism in our communities.  CDEC 29Q Business Meeting will be held immediately following the calendar meeting.

Manhattan pre-k information & application session

The Department of Education offers an information and application session for parents who are applying to pre-kindergarten. There will be one session in each borough and parents may attend any of them, regardless of where you live. College savings hearing

The City Council Education Committee will be holding a public hearing to consider Int. No. 1254-2016 - A Local Law to amend the administrative code of the city of New York, in relation to expanding college savings plan materials in schools to include pre-kindergarten and to distributing college savings plan materials to parents or guardians with a child’s certificate of registration of birth. The full text of Int. No. 1254-2016 can be found at the following link on the Council’s website: http://legistar.council.nyc.gov/LegislationDetail.aspx?ID=2813508&GUID=65EF6F12-2711-47B1-B5FE-11D6C49908AB&Options=Advanced&Search. We invite members of Community Education Councils, parents, students, educators, advocates, and all other stakeholders and interested members of the public to testify at this hearing. Testimony will be limited to 2-3 minutes per person to allow as many as possible to testify. Although the hearing starts at 1:00 pm, the Administration (Department of Education), as well as other witnesses (such as elected officials) have been invited to testify and answer questions from Council Members at the outset, so we do not expect to hear from others until sometime after 2:00 pm. Please make sure you fill out a witness slip on the desk of the Sergeant-at-arms if you wish to testify. If you plan to bring written testimony, please bring at least 20 copies. If you are unable to attend the hearing and wish to submit written testimony, please email your testimony to jatwell@council.nyc.gov.
