ion Policy (PEP) public meeting.
Coming on the heels of a disturbing meeting with public school Chancellor Dennis Walcott, public officials as well as church and community leaders will charge the Chancellor with “Academic Malfeasance” and call for an end to the PEP process that they decry as the antithesis of good government practice.
Church and community leaders of the Southside Community Schools Coalition* will be present to denounce the Bloomberg administration handling of schools as irresponsible, lacking integrity and a failure for District 14 schools in general, and Williamsburg Southside schools, in particular.
High school students from at least four high schools will rally across the street.
Attend the UFT Anti-Bullying Fair on March 1
The UFT will host its first-ever Anti-Bullying Fair. Hundreds of educators, parents and city leaders will be present to view the exhibits at 52 Broadway, second floor, 2 to 6 p.m. All schools and parents ass
ociations are encouraged to send representatives. The goal of the fair is to provide an opportunity for schools and communities to get more information and become more involved with anti-bullying efforts in the New York City area, and to meet great people and organizations with whom to collaborate. There will be free lesson plans and materials, and you can learn which organizations can come to your school to do programs or presentations. The fair is the newest initiative in the union’s BRAVE campaign, which combats bullying in the schools. The union launched its anti-bullying hotline, 212-709-3222, in October.

The City Council’s Education and Finance Committees will hold a joint oversight hearing on the topic “Medicaid Claims for Special Education - Related Services by the Department of Education.”
Time: 10:00 a.m. (*public testimony is estimated to b
egin after 12:00pm)
The Department of Education (DOE) has failed to recover tens of millions of dollars in Medicaid reimbursements for services it provided to special-needs students. The DOE’s failure to claim the Medicaid reimbursements has been attributed to an inability to comply with new rules imposed after a 2005 federal audit found irregularities in City and State Medicaid claims from previous years. The new rules, effective as of September 2009, require more documentation, higher levels of certification for therapists and that districts provide annual training, and hire compliance officers. In a time of fiscal austerity, Medicaid reimbursements can be a significant source of revenue - especially important since districts must provide the services to students whether or not they are reimbursed.
This hearing will examine changes to the DOE’s system for collecting Medicaid reimbursements and whether sufficient improvements have been made to overcome past errors.
Members of Community Education Councils, parents, students, educators, advocates, and all other stakeholders and interested members of the public may testify.

NYC Strategic Alliance for Health (SAFC) is working on a campaign to reform physical education in NYC schools with an interest in lessening the impact of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The Physical Education in Public Schools Task Force, Wo
men's City Club (WCC) and SAfH are collaborating to raise parents' awareness that NYC schools are not in compliance with
NYS Education Department Physical Education requirements. The campaign calls attention to the many benefits of school-based physical education, including the finding that PE leads to improved academic achievement, including standardized test scores. NYS mandates that schools provide at least two periods of PE a week for each child,
which would average about 90 minutes of PE a week. The organizations are hosting the 2nd parent educational forum to inform parents about the initiative.
