Forum on Future of CFE

FORUM ON THE FUTURE OF CAMPAIGN FOR FISCAL EQUITY How Do We Finally Get the Billion$ Owed Us? How can we successfully complete the landmark Campaign For Fiscal Equity (CFE) to obtain increased education funding. CFE began in District 6 in northern Manhattan 20 years ago, and was in litigation for 10 years, going to the highest court in New York State. The Court ultimately ruled that New York City students were being denied their Constitutional right to a "sound basic education " because of inadequate and inequitable school funding. Despite what appeared to be a settlement in 2007 that would provide an additional $5.4 billion to New York City schools, the Governor and the legislature, made cuts in 2010 and 2011 that wiped out the CFE funds that were paid to New York City. Due to changes Governor Cuomo and the legislature enacted it is now estimated that the CFE funding will not be fully paid until 2028. The consequence has been increasing class size, elimination of programs, & reduction in supplies. Come hear: Robert Jackson -- initiator of the historic CFE when he was a District 6 Parent Leader Michael Rebell, Esq -- the lawyer who led the legal team in the 10 year court battle Wendy Lecker, Esq --- Senior Attorney, Campaign for Fiscal Equity Project of the Education Law Center, which will be assisting in any new legal action to get the money Zakiyah Ansari, Advocacy Director Alliance for Quality Education (AQE) --- for 10 years AQE has helped mobilize parents and communities in support of CFE PLACE: A DISTRICT 6 SCHOOL IN NORTHERN MANHATTAN (To be determined) Forum Co-Sponsors: District 6 Presidents’ Council, Community Board 12, District 6 Community Education Council; Education Law Center, Alliance For Quality Education; District 6 Parent Leadership Training Program CONTACT: Josh Karan 917-923-2584 joshkaran2@mac.com
