The Downside

Tiny school, not many spaces

Located above the famed Town Hall in Manhattan’s theater district, Repertory Company High School for Theatre Arts is a tiny school that seeks to inspire its students through theater. Children study acting, music and dance, as well as production and stagecraft. Dance takes the place of physical education. The school has a space for theatrical productions and a dance studio but no gymnasium. Repertory stages about nine productions throughout the year including school-wide drama and school-wide musical productions. The school has partnerships with many respected arts organizations, such as Roundabout Theater Co., NY City Center, Young People’s Chorus, Little Kids Rock, LeAp Onstage, Town Hall and The Shakespeare Society. The school has increased its academic rigor over the years and serves many more children with special needs than it once did. They now make up almost one-fifth of the school population. A parent said, “I can't say enough about the support and enrichment my daughter has received. She speaks about her teachers with such respect and admiration, noting their ability to make learning experiences interesting.” Most students graduate on time, ready to do college-level work, including children with disabilities and those learning English.Course selection is limited but Repertory has a good-sized list of advanced placement classes for high-achievers. The school requires that all students do a research project every year. Seniors create a project in which they analyze a masterwork, write a research paper and direct a play. Because of Repertory's small size, teachers get to know every student and also develop connections with many of their families. In one of several videos on the school’s website, students spoke of the strong ties they had made at the school. To strengthen those connections, all students are assigned to a so-called “critical friends group” that they stay with all four years. It is a challenge to bring together families because they live spread across five boroughs but performances are a draw.Repertory does not have a dedicated college counselor. However, there there are two guidance counselors on staff. Many graduates go onto four-year college, including arts programs. (Lydie Raschka, web reports, September 2018)
