InsideSchools Review

Our review:

JHS 8, which serves a predominantly African-American community, has long been a struggling school. Students complain of fights and bullying and most teachers say there are problems with discipline, according to the Learning Environment Survey. Test scores and attendance are poor, and enrollment has steadily declined in recent years.

Angela Green, principal since 2010, has tried to improve the tone of the school, working closely with parents, greeting students outside the school each morning and standing outside at dismissal, according to the Quality Review. “Parents feel strongly that their ideas are welcomed and represented in the school,” the review said.

The school shares a building with York Early College Academy, and with the Emerson School.

Special education: The school serves a large number of children with special needs. There are "self-contained" classes, only for children with special needs. The school also has team-taught "inclusion classes," where two teachers work in the same classroom with general education students and students with special needs.

Admission: Neighborhood school (Clara Hemphill, web reports, 2013)
