InsideSchools Review

Our review:

The Academy of Medical Technology is designed to prepare students for careers in medicine. Opened in 2008 with a 6th grade and a 9th grade, it has quickly attracted serious, cheerful students who are focused on their work and respectful of their teachers.

Principal Jose Merced, a medical technologist and former assistant principal of John Dewey High School in Brooklyn, calls his school a "little oasis." While students from other schools in the Far Rockaway campus wandered aimlessly in halls during our visit, those from the Academy of Medical Technology moved smoothly and energetically, wasting little time between classes. We saw no heads on the desk or signs of inattention, whether students were filing out work sheets or working in groups. Students wear a uniform of khakis and white shirts or black polos.

The Academy places a heavy emphasis on college prep. We spoke to students who were proud to represent their school at ten-week program run by Cornell called "Health Professions Recruitment and Exposure Program" that entails research, college-level papers and a human anatomy lab, and which is traditionally dominated by students from the highly selective Stuyvesant and Bronx Science.

The Academy began offering AP Biology (its only AP course) in 2010, and there is a core "Health Care Professions" course taught by an RN.  Many students join Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA), a national organization that promotes careers in the medical field. A student represented the state of New York at a National HOSA public speaking competition in 2009.

Students may spend one day a week shadowing clinicians in different departments at Peninsula Hospital, learning simple medical technology and even attending lectures for hospital residents. Merced offers extracurricular courses in medical technology and skills, such as phlebotomy and hematology. Students have also interned at the New York Aquarium. Middle school students visited the New York Hall of Science.

Special education: The school offers collaborative team teaching for students with special needs. It also offers English as a Second Language.

The school shares the Far Rockaway campus with Frederick Douglass Academy VI, Far Rockaway High School, and the Queens High School for Information Research and Technology. Sports teams are building-wide. The building often has long lines to enter through the metal detectors in the morning. (Tom Jacobs, October 2010)
