The Downside

Lots of friction between principal and teachers

August 2015 update: In January 2015 Charles Gallo replaced founding principal Eugene Foley. Gallo was previously principal of Bronx Theatre High School.

September 2012 review: Opened in 2008, the NYC Charter High School for Architecture, Engineering, and Construction Industries (AECI) is designed to offer students skills that will lead to careers in the construction industry.

The school had a rocky start: its founder was charged with embezzlement and the principal and virtually all its teachers left the first year, along with one-third of its students, according to news reports.

Since then, the teachers voted to join the United Federation of Teachers, making the school one of the few charters in the city that is unionizing. There appears to be considerable friction between the principal, Eugene Foley, and his staff: more than half the teachers responding to the Learning Environment Survey said they mistrust the principal and half said academic standards are low. More than half the teachers said order and discipline are poor.

On the positive side, students mostly say they feel safe. The school has above average attendance. Of 86 seniors in 2012, 67 applied to college, according to the minutes of the board of trustees. Students have been accepted at Mercy College, Adelphi, and CW Post, among others.

The school shares space with a Roman Catholic school, Sts. Peter and Paul, in the South Bronx. Sports include boys and girls basketball.

Admissions: lottery. (Clara Hemphill, news reports, September,2012)
