InsideSchools Review

Our review:

Leadership Preparatory Ocean Hill Charter Schools opened in September 2010, one of three Leadership Prep Schools in Brooklyn, all members of the Uncommon Schools, a non-profit organization that runs charter schools.

Leadership Prep Ocean Hill will grow to be a K- 8 school serving 640 students by 2016. In its first year, it was housed at 1137 Herkimer Street, then it moved in 2011 about a mile away to PS 332 building. [Photo at right taken by Samske Art who spearheaded a mural project in the building in 2011.]

Principal Nikeya Bridges, who received a Masters of Education from Harvard, was a curriculum specialist at Teach For America and an elementary school teacher at Bronx Charter School for the Arts. Prior to that, she taught fourth grade in New Orleans.

Following the pattern of other Leadership Prep schools, the Ocean Hill School offers a long school day: from 7:30 a.m.  – 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and until 1:30 p.m on Fridays.

According to its website, the school promotes  "a culture of academic excellence-in which all children are expected to read on or above grade level, in which all children are expected to master one year of high school algebra by the end of grade 8..."  It is a "no excuses" school that uses "structure, academic rigor, and extra support to achieve college success and exemplary character."

Admissions: Lottery held in April. Priority given to District 23.  Applications due April 1.(Pamela Wheaton, May 2013, compiled from web reports)
