What's special:

Orderly school with high expectations

The downside:

Some kids say discipline is not fair

InsideSchools Review

Our review:

Brooklyn East Collegiate Charter School, a middle school housed in PS 9, is an orderly school with high expectations and a strict discipline code. Parents are expected to sign an “accountability contract” in which they promise to get their children to school on time, check their homework, and ensure they follow the school rules.

Parents also promise to volunteer in the school, to come to school if their child is suspended and to send their child to Saturday classes if he or she is failing a class, according to the school website. [Photo is from the school website.]

The school gets high marks on the Learning Environment Survey. Parents, teachers, and students agree the school is orderly and the academics are challenging. Students agree that their teachers like the subjects they teach and inspire them to learn. However, nearly half the students responding to the survey complained of unfair discipline.

The school, opened in 2010, is one of the NYC Collegiate Charter Schools, all affiliated with Uncommon Schools, which manages several New York City charter schools. Graduates may attend the Uncommon Charter High School.

Admissions: Lottery, with preference to District 13. Applications available in January and the lottery is held in April. (Clara Hemphill, school website, DOE statistics, May, 2013)
