InsideSchools Review

Our review:

The Rockaway Park High School for Sustainability is designed to offer interesting projects and activities to students who may be turned off by traditional academics. Students may learn to paddle a kayak, build boats, or study cooking at this Career and Technical Education school. Students take part in a marine science program at the Artisan School Center [see photo] and environmental programs at the Rockaway Waterfront Alliance.

Like the rest of the Rockaways, the school suffered a blow during Hurricane Sandy in October 2012. Students were relocated to the Maspeth High School Campus until January 2013. In the new location, attendance  dropped.

The school, housed in the Beach Channel Educational Complex, was founded in 2010 by Prnicipal Jennifer Connolly, who worked in alternative high schools (and whose mother graduated from Far Rockaway High).

"We really get to know our students, what their likes and dislikes are, how many brothers and sisters they have, what type of learner they are and most importantly what inspires them," she wrote on the school website.

There is a specialized carpentry program where students learn the art of boat building. Students study green building and development, renewable energy, organic foods and nutrition, and may earn a certificate in green carpentry or culinary arts, the school’s website reports. Community service is required.

Students enter with very low levels of skills, and attendance is poor. (A New York Post story also reported problems with teacher attendance.) Though 100 percent of teachers reported in the Learning Environment Survey that they trust the principal and feel respected by her, 60 percent said that order and discipline were not maintained in the school.

Students wear a uniform of a school polo shirt or sweater vest with khaki or gray dress pants/skirt and black shoes.

Afterschool, students can take an elective green carpentry class where they learn about boat building and complete other carpentry projects. They can also participate in building-wide PSAL sports and clubs such as culinary. There are morning and afterschool classes in government and the environment.

Special education: There is an Integrated Co-teaching (ICT) class where students with special needs learn along with general education students and SETSS.

Admissions: Priority to Queens students and residents who attend an information session. (Aryn Bloodworth, DOE statistics, December 2012)
