Early college program; students grow fruits and vegetables on the school's farm

The Downside

Graduation rate needs to improve

Gotham Collaborative, a small school in the Adlai Stevenson Educational Campus, offers an early college program in partnership with Monroe College, and boasts an outdoor farm with 250 fruit trees and organic vegetables.

The school offers dual enrollment classes to students as early as 9th grade that count for both high school and college credit and are taught by Gotham Collaborative teachers. Though not all will do so, students have the opportunity to take enough dual enrollment classes to earn an associates college degree in human resources for free by the time they graduate high school.

Juniors and seniors also participate in internships, including one offered on the school's farm, which is run by the school's award-winning environmental science teacher.

“I want my students to think back on high school about crazy, instructive moments that they can carry with them and potentially use to their own betterment,” the teacher, William Lynam, told the Bronx Times after he won the 2017 Sloan Award for Excellence in Teaching Math and Science.

Gotham Collaborative was created in 2017 when two other small schools in the building, Bronx Guild and Pablo Neruda Academy, were merged. (Clara Hemphill, web reports, November 2018, updated March 2023)
