J.H.S. 080 The Mosholu Parkway

At JHS 80, students enjoy a a range of visual and performing arts classes as well as robotics and coding. The school offers dual language instruction in Spanish and English.

The school serves many newcomers to the country and among the student body nearly 20 different languages are spoken, according to the school’s annual Comprehensive Educational Plan (CEP). To ease their transition to a new language and culture, the school provides some dedicated classes for recent immigrants only.

There are advanced courses that allow some 8th-graders to tackle high school level work as well as classes that support students who are learning English. All students are given a laptop computer to use to during the school day.

Students in the school’s accelerated track may take high school level courses in math, science, English and history. They also may take a free prep course to help them prepare to take the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT).

A large majority of the teaching staff has less than three years experience, though city data shows that ovreall the school does a good job of helping students gain ground, regardless of their skills when they arrive.

In addition to sports, students may participate in a wide array of after-school activities such as music, gardening, arts and crafts, chess and academic help.

An onsite clinic run by Astor Services for Children and Families is staffed by a fulltime social work who provides counseling and other services to MS 80 students and families. 

ADMISSIONS: The school admits students from across the Bronx with top priority to those zoned for the middle school. Admission to the dual language program is screened. In addition to considering students’ home language, the school looks at students’ grades, test scores as well as records of attendance and lateness. (Laura Zingmond, DOE reports, August 2019)
