InsideSchools Review

Our review:

PS 19 is a safe, small K-8 school with lots of parental involvement, strong leadership and contented teachers, according to school surveys. Test scores range from average to above average. Class size is large and the arts are thin compared to some schools—but academics are solid and the administration does a good job of keeping parents informed.

The school website is up-to-date and very informative, with links to Common Core State Standards, class pages, homework expectations and even staff emails. Parents may attend many workshops on academics and other topics to stay informed. Regents-level coursework for 8th-graders is not offered.

Former assistant principal Timothy Sullivan took the helm in 2008 and gets high marks from teachers on school surveys. Teachers say he is a good manager and the school is safe and orderly. The school hires gym, science and computer teachers—and offers chess and theater— but lacks the wider range of art and extras that can be found in larger schools. The school is overcrowded so some specials are held in classrooms.

Middle school students take trips to places like Washington D.C., and Lake Compounce, a water park in Connecticut. They may participate in dances held around certain holidays such as Valentine's Day and Christmas. Students also participate in a number of community outreach programs like Jump Rope for Heart. There are Irish Heritage Performances and Bronx Arts Ensemble presentations.

Admissions: Neighborhood school. (Lydie Raschka, web reports and school data, August 2014)
