InsideSchools Review

Our review:

The International High School at Prospect Heights, which opened in 2004, creates a cozy atmosphere for new immigrants to learn English. The school occupies its own quiet corner of Prospect Heights Educational Complex, overlooking the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and Brooklyn Museum just across the road.

Students and teachers give the school high marks on the Learning Environment Survey. Over 90 percent of students say that their teachers inspire them to learn and 100 percent of teachers reported in the survey that students treat adults in the building with respect. Students say they feel safe in class and around the building.

The school is part of the Internationals Network for Public Schools, which share the mission of teaching newcomers to the United States in small settings.

Among students, the level of English and overall education varies: some enter the school already well educated while others have had almost no formal schooling. Not all students graduate on time, and many graduates are not prepared for college, according to Department of Education statistics.

Students must pass through metal detectors to enter the building. Students may participate in PSAL sports teams with other schools in the building.

Special education: Very limited special education services.

Admissions: The school is open citywide to 9th graders who have arrived in the United States within the previous four years. (Aryn Bloodworth, DOE statistics, December 2012)
