Since joining the school in fall 2003, Principal Willena George has overseen a mostly steady rise in test scores at PS 290 and she and her teachers have established a safe and orderly tone. School surveys show that one hundred percent of teachers feel George is an effective manager. Even with setbacks—in 2013 test scores across the city plummeted when kids took harder tests—her staff has been able to recover and regroup.
Twenty-nine percent of the students were proficient (scoring a level 3 or 4, out of 4, on state tests) in 2013, but by 2014 that number had jumped ten percentage points. Twenty-five percent were proficient in reading in 2014, an improvement over the year before. While these scores are still average, the pattern since her arrival has shown that George and her staff know how to move the needle, even during periods of change.
Ballet Tech provides dance instruction and there is a visual arts teacher, but it seems like a drawback that a school named after Juan Morel Campos—an important Puerto Rican composer, who started studying music at the age of 8—does not have a full-time music teacher.
Space is also tight. A single, large room functions as the "gymnatorium," a gym, cafeteria, and auditorium. Some physical education classes meet in classrooms, and a number of classes meet in two temporary buildings behind the school.
Special education: There are three self-contained special education classes and team-taught classes on every grade level.
