What’s Special

Lots of field trips; strong college guidance

The Downside

Attendance rate has room for improvement

At Bronx Compass High School students enjoy a range of field trips and lots of support in and out of the classroom. The school is on the upswing thanks to a change in leadership, more academic help and the addition of advanced courses.

Principal Brett Roer arrived in January 2017 on the heels of three principal changes in one calendar year. Since his arrival, graduation rates have risen dramatically, several Advanced Placement classes have been added and the school has invested in a range of supports.

Teachers and staff offer multiple levels of support. For instance, 9th grade algebra runs a double period to give students more time to digest lessons and catch up on lagging math skills. After-school and weekend tutoring helps students in all grades stay on track in their classes.

Four full-time guidance counselors and a social worker support students—a lot for a small school. The guidance suite is stocked with free toiletries, school supplies, food to take home and even clothes for any student in need; students may also wash their clothes in laundry machines on-site.

Bronx Compass has shifted away from its original mission as an arts and technology school in favor of a greater focus on academics, though the school continues to offer classes in music production and instrumental music.

Field trips and after-school activities help keep students engaged. A popular culinary after-school program is run in partnership with the Food Network. Students attend Broadway plays, visit museums, learn to ride bicycles in Crotona Park and take an overnight trip to Washington D.C.

Seniors have a dedicated guidance counselor who helps them through the college admissions process including applying for financial aid and successfully applying for scholarships to private universities such as University of Southern California and Fordham. Students in all grades participate in visits to local and out-of-state colleges; representatives from colleges and local businesses also visit the school to help students explore their post-graduation options, according to Roar.

Bronx Compass is located in the large Adlai E. Stevenson Educational Campus building with six other schools, The schools share sports teams, a library and a cafeteria. Students must pass through metal detectors to enter the building. (Laura Zingmond, web reports and interview, July 2019)
