Wave Preparatory Elementary School
Extended PK hours offered: Contact program about extended hours.
A neighborhood school in Far Rockaway, Wave Preparatory Academy opened in the fall of 2012 with grades PK-2 and is expanding each year until it serves grades Pk-5. Students at WAVE Prep take foreign language classes, go on field trips, and participate in community service projects. It replaces P.S. 215 Lucretia Mott, which closed in 2015.
Students at Wave Prep frequently work in small groups, allowing teachers to reach children at different levels. The school seeks to help children develop academically, socially, and emotionally, and teachers incorporate advisory and character education into daily instruction.
The building includes a library, auditorium, gymnasium, and cafeteria. After Hurricane Sandy, students were temporarily relocated to IS 232 in Crown Heights, Brooklyn due to the damage to the school building. They returned to the building in the beginning of November.
Special education: Wave Prep offers both integrated co-teaching and self-contained classes for students with special needs.
Admissions: Zoned school. Preference is given to students in the zone and those with siblings at the school. (Pauline Zaldonis, April 2013, internet-based research; photo from DOE website.)
