The Downside

Large classes

PS 204 houses a gifted program for kids from throughout the district and attracts many high achieving students, but struggling kids get equal attention. Celebrating diversity is in the school's mission statement. A program called "Family Living" helps children learn to have "respect for themselves and the people around them," according to the friendly school website, one of the only websites we have seen that is written and illustrated by children. Other highlights include the dance festival [see photo], science fair, glee club and a 5th-grade carnival.

A safe school with strong leadership and happy teachers, PS 204 has a growing Chinese population, Spanish speakers and children with hearing loss and other challenges. Classes are large but teachers manage to offer kids the help they need to perform well on state tests. The average daily attendance rate is above average and school surveys indicate the school is safe.

Reading is approached through a mix of structured phonics lessons and fun-to-read books. Families are invited to a literacy night in the spring, as well as a book fair, a spelling bee and a storytelling contest according to the website.

The school sponsors afterschool activities such as a drama club, homework help and test prep. The Brooklyn Chinese Association runs other programs.

Special education: In team-taught classes, general education students and those with special needs work side-by-side in one classroom. There is a small class for children with more serious special needs only.

Admissions: Kids are tested for the district's gifted program, called Delta, in the spring. (Lydie Raschka, DOE data, April 2014)
