Our Insights

What’s Special

Spacious outdoor play area, high academic standards for all

The Downside

No music teacher

PS 236 is a well-run, well-equipped school in a residential neighborhood with one- and two-family homes. The school has an inviting library with big windows that overlook a reburished playground.

The school sets high academic standards, and test scores are above the citywide average. Data also show that children with disabilities perform average or above on state tests.

Salil Paingankar became principal in November of the 2013-2014 school year, earning high marks since, with most teachers reporting he is a good manager.

A downside: There is no music teacher, but there are dance, art, STEAM and technology teachers on staff, plus a full-time librarian, according to the school website.

The outdoor play yard is spacious and clean with a bold track outline and an interesting climbing structure that looks like a giant spider web.

Admissions: Neighborhood school. Admission to G&T is according to NYC Department of Education standards. (Lydie Raschka, web reports and school data, July 2022)
