The Downside
Classes need more children
Housed in a lovely new building, the Pre-K Center at Peck Slip has room for 10 classrooms. Opened in 2015 in The Peck Slip School, the Pre-K Center has its own administration and, unlike the elementary school, accepts children who live anywhere in the city. One child even comes from the Bronx.
Site Director Cynthia Lasano, is an experienced early childhood educator having served as an instructional coach in District 27 and a kindergarten teacher at PS 51 in Queens. She said she has hired experienced pre-kindergarten teachers.
The classrooms are cheerful and well-equipped. Teachers use the Creative Curriculum, which emphasizes project-based learning. Children may measure the length of their own bodies with blocks and ask questions such as How many blocks are in our bodies? and How many letters are in your name?
Classes are held from 8:50 am to 3:10 pm.
At the time of our visit, only four classrooms were being used and each only had 10 children. The center opened in late August without a lot of publicity, and teachers speculated that many parents had already made arrangements for their children by that time. (Clara Hemphill, October 2015)
