Our review
Bedford-Stuyvesant New Beginnings Charter School opened in September 2010 with 200 students in kindergarten through third grade. It will expand to serve students in grades K to 8.
The school uses the Core Knowledge curriculum, which is based on the work of E.D. Hirsch, author of Cultural Literacy: What Every American Needs to Know. In addition to studying core subjects - English, math, science and social studies - students get instruction in technology, art, music, theater, physical education, and Latin (beginning in third grade).
Students in all grades are required to fulfill at least 25 hours of community service per school year.
The school day runs from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with breakfast at 7:30 a.m. An after school program runs from 4:30 to 6 p.m.
