Our review
Bushwick Ascend Charter School opened in September, 2010 with 205 students in kindergarten and first grade. It's the third school opened by Ascend Learning, a network of New York City-based charter schools that includes the Brooklyn and Brownsville Ascend schools. Bushwick Ascend will expand by one grade per year until it reaches it target capacity of 1000 serving students in grades kindergarten through 12.
Like its sister schools, Bushwick Ascend will follow the SABIS Educational System, a highly structured curriculum for grades kindergarten through 12 that covers a broad range of subjects including science, social studies, art, music, health, physical education, and computers. Students’ progress is closely monitored through an internal, computerized based tracking system that "allows 'gaps' in student knowledge to be pinpointed as they form," according the SABIS website.
Dellianna Burrows, is the school's founding director. She is the former director of an achievement first charter school, according to the school's website.
The school is housed in a temporary location, the former Elizabeth Seton Catholic School for at least two years until a permanent site is found. There is no outdoor yard, but the school uses a public park across the street for lunchtime recess. The school day runs from 8a.m. until 4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday and 8: a.m. to 2 p.m. on Fridays. There is no after school program.
Admissions: By lottery. Priority to students in District 32. Check the school's website for more information. (Laura Zingmond, telephone interview, October 2010)
