What’s Special

Orchestra and chorus; district-wide G&T

The Downside

Instruction for students with disabilities not as strong

Housed in a sprawling, two-story building erected in 1977, PS 182 is a large elementary school that offers chorus and orchestra programs in the upper grades, as well as a gifted and talented program that attracts students from across the district. The school is located in the Clason Point section of the Bronx.

PS 182 has three classrooms for pre-kindergarten students. They received high marks from the city on quality. Pre-k and kindergarten classrooms open to a small yard with climbing equipment. The school also has a spacious renovated playground for older students.

At PS 182, there are lively arts programs, delivered mostly through well-regarded not-for-profit organizations including Studio in a School for visual arts; Inside Broadway, for theater; and Education Through Music, which provides instrumental music and chorus in grades 4 and 5, according to the school’s Comprehensive Educational Plan (CEP). Families are invited to art, theater and music shows throughout the year. In addition to an auditorium, students benefit from music and art studios.

As a tie-in to their academic studies students take field trips; for example, they travel to the Mount Vernon Hotel and Gardens Museum in Manhattan, one of the few remaining pre-1800s buildings in the city.

PS 182 has a sizeable number of students with disabilities; serving them well is an area in need of improvement, the CEP shows. These students score well below the citywide average on state test scores. The school has set a goal to increase standards and offer more rigorous instruction.

The school has forged a partnership with a school mental health consultant program to support students in overcoming barriers to academic achievement, the CEP also shows.

SPECIAL EDUCATION: The school offers integrated co-teaching classes, in which two teachers work in the same classroom with both general education students and those needing special services. There is a small “self contained” class for children with more serious disabilities in 1st grade.

ADMISSIONS: Zoned neighborhood school. Admissions to gifted and talented classes are according to Department of Education guidelines.  (Lydie Raschka, web reports, February 2020)
