TOPIC: Anyone Heard?

Last year cut-off for Bronx Science was 517, and Brooklyn Tech was about 487, so this seems a little low for Bx Sci. I would call DOE. I think SHS placements are final, but you lose nothing by trying.

Supermom 11, The lowest Bronx Science score I have heard of so far is 514. The only thing you can do is have your child take the SHSAT over again for 10th grade admission. First, Bronx Science does not participate in the Summer Discovery Program. Second, there's no preference for other family members having attended.

Thanks everyone for the info. I had no idea the cutoff was so high for Science...but beg to differ on the Summer institute...Bronx Science had one for 6th graders and I have the paperwork to prove it.....I am very happy with my son getting into Brooklyn Tech, it is just going to be a 2 hour commute for him. We live 15 minutes from Science.

The Summer Discovery Program (SDP) is not the same as the Specialized High School Institute (SHSI) that you're referring to. SHSI preps you to take the SHSAT for entry into whatever school you score enough to get into, it is not only for entrance into Bronx Science. SDP is for those students that are low-income and just missed the cutoff score. If selected, those students have to take an additional 6 weeks of summer school and retake the SHSAT. Both Stuy and Bx Sci do not participate in SDP. Was your son offered a good non-specialized high school? A two hour commute is crazy.

He got into RKA because the school told us we needed to put it in the top 3 (bad advice)...so no other schools considered him....he did get 2 scholarships to catholic school, but I still need to figure out how I am going to come up with the rest of the money. We are going to go to the School Fair tomorrow, and hopefully might find an alternative. Hate to turn down Brooklyn Tech...need to think seriously about everything...there has to be a better way to get into a good school. When I went with my son to take the test at Bronx Science, I was one of the only ones there with an NY license plate.

Supermom11, before you go to the Round 2 Fair tomorrow, here's a link for you to see which programs you may be interested in. I'm assuming you are interested the "S" (Screened) schools in the Bronx. Look to the far right column and make sure the school is accepting Gen Ed students. Good luck.

It's here somewhere on InsideSchools.org as well, but due to my poor vision I need the large version.
