I live in Kew Gardens which doesn't have a middle school at all. On schools.nyc.gov, it does show the zoned MS is MS 137 America's School of Heroes 109-15 98th St Ozone park. However, can I send my kid to Russell Sage MS instead in Forest Hills? The commute will be much lesser and I believe it's a better school too. If possible, how would one go about doing this and do schools typically give preference to those folks who are in the zonal limits?

In this wacky system, your zoned school isn't always the school closest to you. You should contact the school to see if it is a zoned school or if it is a district school choice in which you can apply, I'm assuming it's located in your district. Also check the Inside School's review page for the school as it may list admissions criteria. If it is zoned, perhaps they will take kids out of zone if there are seats available.
