Baccalaureate School? Questions while student still in 5th grade... 1 year, 1 month ago #9703

I asked this on the Bacc school profile page, but I wasn't sure if this was a better place to ask it or not. My child is currently in a small private school -- does that affect her chances for admission to Bacc? We're considering a public middle school for next year (6th grade), but we're worried about the transition affecting admission chances. Bacc is her dream school! And we know some kids already in there, so we know how great Bacc is. Any advice would be appreciated!

Baccalaureate School indeed starts in 7th grade, not 6th. You may wish to consider applying to other middle schools that start in 6th grade, and staying there, so your child does not have to transfer twice in two years. Many kids find this disruptive, especially as most public elementary schools no longer have 6th grades. So your child would be in middle school for one year, with less of the warm elements that schools with elementary grades have. That can be pretty rough for some kids. But you know your child best.

Yes, I know that Bacc starts in 7th. That is why I'm having trouble deciding whether my child should continue at the private for another year, and miss the first year of the 6-8 middle school should she NOT get into Bacc, or risk changing twice in two years should we chose the new middle and she DOES get into Bacc. Sorry my initial query wasn't more clear -- it's been confusing for us, too!

Frankly, if it were my child, I would keep her in the private school for one more year, especially if most of her classmates are staying, and you are happy with the academics for 6th grade. This way, she will do well in 6th grade, and she will need this for whatever school she does end up attending, and this will give her considerable comfort about the process. 6th grade can be pretty rough for kids. By 7th grade, things are easier for most, from what I have seen. A transfer in 7th grade seems to go better, as the kids are more mature.
