What’s Special

A safe, orderly atmosphere

The Downside

Not many graduates prepared for college

Mott Hall High School, opened in 2004, is modeled on the city's successful Mott Hall middle schools. Students wear uniforms in an atmosphere that is safe, orderly and firm—but academic achievement has a ways to go to help graduates prepare for college.

Grace Villalona became principal in 2010. She has improved the atmosphere and increased attendance. A student wrote to say the school, though tiny, now offers more clubs and sports to get students involved.

A junior said, “I believe this school has made a big improvement since I first came in freshmen year. They are always on top of the students making sure they get to class and are doing their work. If a student is behind on work… they offer tutoring Monday – Thursday and Saturdays.”

Many students arrive in 9th grade lacking basic reading and writing skills. To help them improve, teachers infuse reading and writing in all subjects, according to the Comprehensive Educational Plan. The quality of instruction is inconsistent, but teachers receive good feedback from the principal, according to the Quality Review.

Teachers and guidance counselors make phone calls to check up on absences and to remind students of important dates, such as upcoming Regent's exams.

Parents are welcome. They volunteer for the Saturday Academy and some participate in the knitting and crocheting club. (Lydie Rascka, web reports, December 2018)
