What’s Special

Technology-focused curriculum in a beautiful facility

The Downside

Graduation rate needs to improve

MS/IS 368 IN-Tech Academy is a combined middle and high school that integrates technology into all classrooms. Beginning in 6th grade, students take technology classes in the school's Mac and PC labs. In the high school, students have the opportunity to pursue computer graphics and web design, or to work in dedicated computer repair and networking labs where they learn the skills to obtain professional certifications such as Cisco networking.

The school is housed in modern, airy building with an interior courtyard that floods the halls with ample natural light and features a large, colorful mosaic. There are  several computer labs, a large auditorium, dedicated art and music rooms, and a full-size gym with locker rooms. Outside, basketball courts, tennis courts, and a track lie in the shadow of the wall that divides the Kingsbridge and Riverdale neighborhoods.

The high school graduation and college readiness rates fall below the citywide average, though among graduates who do attend college, most stick with it. There’s also some tension between teachers and the administration. Too few teachers report that discipline and order are maintained and that the principal is an effective manager, based on responses to the annual NYC School Survey.

In-Tech takes part in the Middle School Quality Initiative (MSQI), the city’s program designed to boost literacy with a longer school day and special activities for students in grades 6-8 such as a debate team.

Incoming freshman participate in a summer bridge program that helps students shore up math and literacy skills and eases their transition to high school.

Riverdale Neighborhood Houses runs an after-school program that includes STEM and arts activities as well as sports for middle school students. High school students may participate in clubs and PSAL sports.

The Young Women’s Leadership Network's College Bound Initiative funds a robust college support program, which includes guidance for students and families and trips to college campuses. Manhattan College hosts assemblies for girls to promote interest in engineering and provides tutors, student teachers and counselors.

Middle school students wear a uniform of khaki pants or skirts and white or gray collared shirts with the school logo. High school students swap the khakis for black pants or skirts..

SPECIAL EDUCATION: There are ICT (integrated co-teaching) classes on all grade levels. The school also has some self-contained classes. (Laura Zingmond, web reports, December 2018)
