Our review
MS/IS 368 IN-Tech Academy prepares students in grades 6-12 for the 21st century by integrating technology into all classrooms. The beautiful building, which opened in 2005, has an interior courtyard that floods the halls with ample natural light and features a large, colorful mosaic. The school boasts four computer labs, a large auditorium, dedicated art and music rooms, and a full-size gym with locker rooms. Outside, basketball courts, tennis courts, and a track lie in the shadow of the wall that divides the Kingsbridge and Riverdale neighborhoods.
Technology is integrated into all MS/HS 368 classrooms and every lesson, according to the Riverdale Press. Teachers use SMARTboards, students use laptops, iTouches and PDAs to make classes interactive and hands-on. In 2012, 6th graders were given desktop computers through CFY, a national nonprofit organization.
The school does a good job of taking students who are performing below grade level in reading and math and graduating them ready for college-level work. There is a wide selection of Advanced Placement classes along with College Now and an opportunity to work toward Microsoft Office Specialist Certification, which certifies students are "fluent" in all Office applications, and Internet and Computing Core Certification (IC3), a standard for digital literacy.
In the high school, students have the opportunity to pursue computer graphics and web design, or to work in one of two dedicated computer repair and networking labs where they learn the skills to obtain professional A+ certification or Cisco certification.
Though students reported in the Learning Environment Survey that they are satisfied at the school, teachers reported communication problems. Nearly half said that they do not feel supported by the principal, and more than half would want to work at a different school.
Middle school students wear a uniform of khaki pants and white button-up shirts with ties. High schoolers swap the khakis for black slacks.
Afterschool, students can participate in PSAL sports along with other clubs and activities, including cheerleading, MOUSE Squad and robotics.
Special education: There are ICT classes on all grade levels. The school also offers self-contained classes.
Admissions: The zoned middle school admits around 25 students from outside the zone through an application process. Middle school students are given priority for the high school, followed by students from District 10. Students entering the high school must have grades above 80 percent and scores of 3-4 on standardized tests.
