What’s Special

High-level academics for students interested in math and science

The Downside

Metal detectors

Jamaica Gateway to the Sciences, housed in the Jamaica Educational Campus, offers a challenging curriculum designed to prepare for careers in medicine, science and technology.

Students are required to take four years of math and science and may go on field trips related to their coursework. For example, students in chemistry and AP biology have visited Stony Brook University for a lab experience day and physics students went to Six Flags for physics day. The school also offers Regents tutoring on weekends and after school. Students may take College Now courses with CUNY for college credit.

The school does a good job preparing students for college, and a higher proportion graduate with an Advanced Regents than at a typical New York City high school, according to city data.

Formerly the Gateway Institute for Pre-College Education at Jamaica, a program held in the old Jamaica High School, Jamaica Gateway to the Sciences opened as a stand alone school in 2011. The school has maintained its partnership with the Gateway Institute for Pre-College Education, an organization that provides rigorous academic programs in science, math and literacy that prepare students for success in college.

The school shares the Jamaica Educational Campus building with two other high schools and a 6-12 school. The schools share facilities and sports teams including baseball, basketball, football, golf, handball, track, soccer, swimming, tennis, volleyball and wrestling. Unfortunately, students must pass through metal detectors to enter the building. Most students report feeling safe inside the building and on their way to school, according to survey results.

The school is making efforts to provide students with more support, with three guidance counselors, a social worker and a college advisor. A large support team means that students have a positive supportive environment where their social and emotional developmental and academic success is addressed regularly. Students also have advisory and college prep classes to ensure they have the skills they need when they graduate.
