District 23

One of the smallest in the city, District 23 serves the neighborhoods of Ocean Hill, Brownsville, and parts of East New York. Single-family homes are interspersed with old brownstones, apartment buildings, and public housing projects. Many district schools follow the Core Knowledge curriculum developed by E.D. Hirsch. In the 2007 reorganization of the Department of Education, many District 23 principals joined the Knowledge Network Leadership Support Organization led by Kathleen Cashin, the former district superintendent. The district is home to Kingsborough Medical Center and Brookdale Hospital
