District 3District 3 covers the West Side of Manhattan from 59th Street to 122nd Street, from the Hudson River to Central Park and 110th Street. It reaches Fifth Avenue above the park. The northern neighborhoods, including Harlem, have been gentrifying in recent years and many longtime residents have been priced out. District 3 schools are uneven in quality, with some of the best in the city and some that have yet to reach their potential. The district boasts several innovative schools, including the progressive Manhattan School for Children and the Center School. The Special Music School and the Anderson school are open citywide to talented youngsters. The district was a pioneer in developing dual language programs and has a reputation for vocal parent participation. The area includes Columbia University and its affiliated Teachers College, and Bank Street College of Education - all working closely with District 3 Schools. |
