District 31District 31 is the only school district in the city to encompass an entire borough, Staten Island. Though neighborhoods have names, such as New Springville and Port Richmond, Staten Islanders tend to think of their borough in terms of regions: north shore, south shore and mid-island. It's the most suburban of all the boroughs with a naturally hilly terrain that boasts the highest point along the entire eastern seaboard of the United States. Politically more conservative than the rest of New York City, Staten Island has long been home to generations of Irish and Italian American families, but in recent years has welcomed immigrants from India, Korea, the Caribbean and Central America. Most students attend their zoned schools. The Petrides School, which serves grades K-12, and the Marsh Avenue School for Expeditionary Learning, are open to applicants from throughout Staten Island. |
