A new selective school founded with the support of Columbia University, the Columbia Secondary School for Math, Science and Engineering (CSS), is designed to increase the educational opportunities available to bright students who live north of 96th Street. Opened with a 6th grade in fall 2007, the school plans to add a grade each year until it serves 650 students in grades 6-12. High school juniors and seniors who qualify will be able to take courses for credit at the university free of chargequite a bargain considering the cost of an Ivy League education. Teachers at Columbia Secondary School may also take advantage of ties to the university: staff members may take Columbia graduate courses for free, and may use the gym and library.
