When Jacob Mnookin, the founding principal of Coney Island Prep, was considering locations for his new charter school, he began by looking at a map of existing New York charter schools. "There was a gaping hole in South Brooklyn," he said in a phone interview with Insideschools.org. To fill that hole, Coney Island Prep will open in September 2009 with 81 students in 5th grade and will grow one grade per year until it serves. . .
