Positive affirmation is a way of life at PS 123. Award ceremonies celebrating student work take place often, said the librarian, Denise Carrillo. Principal Beverly Lewis gives "commendation cards" to classes that behave well in the hall and cafeteria, and the class with the most at the end of the month receives a pizza party. This incentive system has improved the tone of the school, teachers said.

Lewis stepped into her job in early 2004. Her predecessor had been at the school 15 years, and a number of staff members we met. . .
