The Staten Island School for Civic Leadership, opening in September 2009 in a new building, will use partnerships with local organizations to create a brigade of youth leaders dedicated to supporting their neighborhood community. The school will open in the Graniteville neighborhood, initially serving grades PK-1 and grade 6 and growing to serve PK-8 with some 800 students at full capacity. It is the borough’s first PK-8. Founding Principal Rose Kerr, assistant principal at PS 22, has already established partnerships with the Seaview Rehabilitation Center and Wagner College. She envisions a school in which students get to meet local leaders and become actively involved in the community, doing such things as creating community gardens. Kerr said the school will follow the Core Knowledge curriculum, developed by E.D. Hirsch, author of “What Your Kindergartner Needs to Know” and other books prescribing what children should learn in each grade in order to be "culturally literate." Civics projects will be incorporated into the curriculum. Admissions: Open to all District 31 students. For K and 1, students zoned to PS 20, PS 21, and PS 22 will have priority. For 6th grade, priority will be given to students zoned for IS 51 and IS 72. (Crissy Strining, March 2009, telephone interview) |
