The dilapidated building that formerly housed P.S. 151 on the Upper East Side stood as a representation of its deeper issues: poor academic performance and low enrollment. The school was closed by the city in 2001 and the building was demolished. In September 2009, eight years later, PS 151reopened in a new home on 91st Street, in a building that formerly housed the Our Lady of Good Counsel School. P.S. 151 is phasing in one grade at a time, enrolling students in the zone. (From 2001-2009 families zoned for PS 151 were placed by lottery in other Upper East Side schools.) For the 2009-2010 school year, there were four kindergarten classes of 25 students each. One class is a Collaborative Team Teaching classroom that has two teachers and serves 10 special needs students within the general education setting, according to the school's website. The school lacks an outdoor play area, but there is a multipurpose room designated for movement classes, art, and music. Students will also be taken out into the neighborhood for class projects and to the local green spaces such as Carl Schurz Park and Bennet Playground. The school has partnerships with the Rhinelanders Children's Center, the 92nd Street Y, and the Stanley Isaac's Neighborhood Center to provide after school programs. Students will be met by representatives from each organization after school and walked to their facilities to take part in a variety of activities. (Dan Fletcher, September 2009 Information gathered from school's website and press release) |
