PS 194 is a school struggling to stay afloat just "one step away" from landing on the state's list of failing schools, according to its administration. Although its 4th-grade test scores in both English and math have risen, the scores for all grades combined have been stagnant for three years. Only about a quarter of the students meet or exceed standards. Part of the school's response has been to introduce lots of after-school and Saturday programs. The weekend before our visit, about a third of the students in 3rd through 6th grade attended one such Saturday session.
