In 2000, CES 55 was the worst performing school in New York City, according to the Daily News. One year later, Pamela Edwards, a former assistant principal at the school, became principal, keeping a clipping of the News item on her office desk "for motivation." In 2004 the school reached a welcome milestone, when it was removed from New York State's list of schools so bad that they risk being closed -- an achievement celebrated with a few small signs in the office and on classroom doors throughout the school.
