Located in a desolate area of the Bronx, South Bronx High School was plagued by safety issues. Students who had to cross a public park to get to school were vulnerable to robberies and bullying. Although a handful of students succeeded and even excelled at South Bronx, the vast majority were too discouraged by the daily challenges of their lives to finish high school. In an attempt to recapture the spirits of these students, administrators created three new small schools in the building,
