Amid a quiet stretch of single family homes and low buildings in East New York, Transit Tech Career and Technical Education High School is housed in an austere gray building that dates back to World War II and looms over the neighborhood. A vocational school begun in the 1940s to train students to build aircraft, Transit Tech continues to educate young adults in real world technical skills. A small model airplane — a reminder of the school's origins — is suspended from the high ceiling of the school's "railcar lab" where students now can acquaint themselves with the workings of a retired subway car.
