At The Young Women's Leadership School (TYWLS), students spend their days immersed in a culture of learning and civility where high expectations are the norm and a college education is the goal. Founded in 1996, the TYWLS in Manhattan is the flagship program for a growing network of urban, all-girls public schools that target average and struggling students from low-income homes and offer a challenging college preparatory education. The school's graduation and college attendance rates equal those of the city's most competitive schools.

Most TYWLS students live nearby in District 4 and start in the middle school, which expanded in 2008 to include a 6th grade. Roughly 90 percent of the middle school students stay for high school. There are two classes per grade in middle school and three per grade in high school. Althea Bradshaw-Tyson took the helm in 2008 after the founding principal, Kathleen Ponze, became the director of education of the Young Women's Leadership Network.
