Harvey Milk High School seeks to provide a safe haven for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students who have experienced discrimination, harassment and violence in mainstream schools. Started in the 1980s as a small program of a gay youth advocacy group called the Hetrick-Martin Institute, Harvey Milk officially became a school and expanded to 100 students in July 2003. The school's inception was met with resistance from critics who called the school "discriminatory;" in reality, the school is open to students of all sexual orientations, and several heterosexual students have attended. Many Harvey Milk students take advantage of after-school programs (run by Hetrick-Martin) which include art, counseling and job readiness training, and are open to students citywide. Harvey Milk is housed in an office building in the East Village. (This review is based on press reports; Emily Wallace, July 2004)
