Williamsburg Charter Hgh School takes education seriously, conducting Saturday classes and demanding much study. Students know that they will immediately be yanked off any sports teams if they fall below a grade of 70 in even one subject. Students take a basic skills assessment the summer before their freshman year, and the results help the school structure classroom instruction. Administrators found in the school's inaugural year that skill levels ranged from 3rd grade to 12th. As a result, there is an honors class on each grade, as well as a remedial class that is split in half for all major subjects. We felt a keen sense of camaraderie at this school, particularly striking because of the student body's highly diverse mix of whites, Latinos, and African-Americans.
