Jonas Bronck Academy is a small progressive middle school. Founded as a program in 1997, it received school status in Fall 2005. Class discussions are interesting and engaging. But if you are looking for conventional teaching methods, Jonas Bronck is probably not your cup of tea. The students sometimes treat teachers with an informality that borders on disrespect. Jonas Bronck Academy is based on the philosophy that it's better to teach a few subjects well than to offer a smattering of every imaginable elective. Humanities (which combines history and English), is a strong focus here, with double periods that can last as long as 2 ½ hours. In addition to humanities, kids study math, science, art, and Spanish and not much else.
