The UFT Charter School was founded by the United Federation of Teachers (UFT) with great fanfare and expectations in September 2005indeed, a documentary about the start of the school debuted at the 2006 Tribeca Film Festival. The school was planned by a task force of teachers, professional development specialists, union officers and former union leaders. "The UFT's success will prove that the union is not to blame for the city schools' problems," said UFT vice president Michelle Bodden. While many proponents of charter schools have suggested that excessive union regulations prevent ordinary public schools from being successful, the UFT Charter School is out to prove that it's possible to run a good school while following the union contract.
