Central Park East II educators say they see the school as an educational democracy. Teachers have the final say, but they think children should exercise power over their education, too. Everybody in the building including students and teachers is on a first-name basis, and there's a weekly school-wide meeting where all gather together so that each child can have a voice in the larger community. At the meeting we observed, the children who spoke up the most were the youngest. Teachers also stay with each class for two years, in order to form close relationships.
