The Calypso rhythms of Raffi's "Day-O" blared on a record player in the pre-kindergarten class at PS 29, and the teacher led her pupils dressed in matching yellow shirts and blue pants and skirts in a hip-swinging dance around the classroom. Upstairs, 3rd graders huddled over sleek, white, wireless laptop computers, researching the habitats of wolves in preparation for a class trip to a wolf preserve upstate. In another room, the school's reading coach loaded clear plastic backpacks with flash cards, books, and dolls (based on characters in books) to send home as a way to encourage parents to read aloud to their children and help kids master arithmetic facts.
