Learning about chemicals by making perfume with experts from the Estee Lauder cosmetics company, creating sculptures with volunteers from the Whitney museum, putting on shows with the help of Broadway professionals, and starting libraries at home armed with a $50 gift certificate to buy booksthese are some of the innovative programs that PS 20 offers its kids. This relaxed but orderly school goes out of its way to take advantage of New York's resources, drawing learning opportunities not only from Broadway and world-class museums but also from its Lower East Side neighborhood, the home of a number of PS 20 teachers.
